STEVEN QUINN RESEARCH

Image by Steven Quinn http://stevenquinnartist.wordpress.comSteven Quinn is an artist born in Belfast but now spends all of his time creating pieces within the UK- he creates collages that involve cut outs from magazines, books and newspapers which enhance the imagery of combining cut outs together, Steven loves to create a twist on an original image by taking away or changing the primary context of its meaning. In particular, his cut outs involve people from the 1950's especially families, as he sticks them next to landscapes such as explosions.
I was inspired to even write about Steven Quinn as an artist of inspiration because the objects and scenarios he creates are very unique and relatable as a personal approach to me, I needed to find some more inspiration regarding the scenarios that artists include when creating a surrealist college. When researching into his own webpage I found a blog and topic which contained surrealist collages called 'Surreal and Dystopian', I had to research what dystopian meant and it means when a society is frightened and scared' This really gave me an insight to how he wants his work to have an effect on his viewers , and to me it really was successful.
Steven Quinn mixes 1950s iconography with space travelI am inspired by the backgrounds in particular as they give an approach of living in the past living in a different world. However, I don't like how there are limited mediums that are used within these collages and they do not give a feel for the texture on the background, If I were to change anything to Steven Quinn's compositions I would change the restriction to materials added to the collage and would use the wide space of a background to work upon- This could be to work with oil pastels onto of a dried thick brush stroke of acrylic paint,  or maybe even adding a rough material such as sandpaper.
