'PLANETS' BY THIERRY W. DESPONT
After looking at the book 'Hubble' I was then suggested to research and to look into the book called 'Planets' by Thierry W. Despont' who actually published the work of abstract paintings and other large scale pieces that have been printed into a very beautifully present book. I was inspired by the front cover first of all because the texture really gave me an acknowledgment of how i could re create experiments inspired by the book.
In relation to the other book I looked into deeply I notice that the colours are really powerful in all pieces that have a dark non-tonal, background, What I mean by non tonal is that the whole background s black and does not have a gradient of grey or another colour blending or building up a 3D image for the foreground.
Over the 2 page spread for each print i began to feel more in relation to the artists portfolio because I thought i could actually feel what the texture would be like on the piece, On one of the images in particular i noticed the paint had been layered to grab a mark made textured surface. The colours on this planet portray a red, burnt orange, mustard and black combination of mixed colours, so now i have a better understanding of the colours I am able to experiment regarding both warm and cold tone colours. To me, i looks like the artist has create texture by either layering paint or added a lot of black to the composition to create shadow, by doing this he may had to fold the image to duplicate the same print on either side whilst leaving it to dry to get these very unique and abstract marks. I think i would be able to re create this effect by maybe printing with very shaped materials such as bubble wrap, using bubble wrap will create a thick blob of paint in the middle of each mini mark as the paint gathers towards the middle of the print, also making the human eye to focus on the sole shadow of the composition.
There was one piece that gave me a relation to my own visual inspiration of the fireworks as the artist has created a galaxy like composition that in fluctuates the stars being bright, The composition itself looks like he was painting from a birds eye view to get a real jest of the shape of the universe/ planet. You are able to see where the artist has made marks on the composition at the top where it seems to be his brush has stroked with one curved line.
There are many different types of marks created on every single piece to portray a shadowing and realistic approach to the universe, Some of the marks created vary from being smooth, thick brush stroke lines to splattered paint which has not got the variable of being controlled. I have learnt that from this book the artist creates a acknowledgment of texture in the way that he adds the black or white tones to his work, If he were to put black marks by dotting it with a sponge then to me, I would feel that as a viewer the surface on the composition has a rough, sand paper like texture as there is a build up of shadowed colour. Although this book has given me a lot of determination to experiment with different ways of creating texture through wet mediums I am not keen on the realistic approach. This is where I am going to create ways of adding more exaggerated colours to my work by creating an impact, but also thinking about how I will apply texture and where I will add tones of black and white into the compositions.
