BEGINNING OF SURREAL COLLAGE USING IMAGES REFLECTION
I firstly wanted to use a black 'out of space' background as a starting point because i was aware that I must test it out to see if i actually think it works within a surreal collage composition, I found this image from pinterest and have saved it as reference, I stuck it to a white cartridge paper because it is the most simple way of creating a collage as i then began to cut into apart of an image which was taken in shoot 1. I incorporated an image from shoot 1 when i visited an abandoned coal mine because although i didn't get the best lighting from them, i liked this metal object which had rusted but was decaying in a unique aspect. I liked how that when i cut away the greenery from the image, i was left with what i wanted and the background appears in the cut out parts; I also wanted to included a personal meaning so i printed an olds photo off of me, my mum and my brother and i picked this one in particular because it shows the real affection we have for her and i loved how vintage the image appears even though I had not edited it. I added a simple piece of white string to portray the transformation of length and distortion of how small the photo is in comparison to the background of being out of space, it made me view my own experiment in a different way when the string was added especially because it is white, it allows the eye to focus of looking down the string from the top of the page to the bottom.
When cutting out the image I began thinking out playing around with distortion so i chose to place the image on top by layering it over the other photo of metal bar, I loved how it made it look like we were looking into the distance whilst sitting no such an abandoned material, it portrayed an emotion where i felt content with my family and made me realise that although we all die, we could actually enter another life where our family remains with us. Overall, i like how the layering of paper can create such scenarios but i feel like it can be limited when using such paper, i would begin to add more string maybe? or begin to distort the placement of images.
For this experiment i was using the same technique as the last experiment but used a different colour strings wanted to see if it would change the composition massively, i feel like the black string works much better than white string just purely because it highlights shape of an image more definite and with this collage in particular, I feel like the string highlights the 2D texture on the planet and its depth. The actual context behind this image shows how an image of me as a memory from the past when i was younger has a link to the places i visited when i was that age, i have used and cut out a small chunk from a landscape photo of when i went on holiday, i decided not to use a lot of the image because i wanted to experiment with distorting it to make the landscape appear smaller than the photo.
Overall I like the black string and how it can aline with the image but to improve or change i would chose a colour of the string which links to the colour of the photo cut outs that i am adding to build up a picture relating to my theme.
I have used an image of a mountain as the primary background as i wanted to experiment with the effects given off if i were to change the photo from being actually out of space and doing/acting in scenarios within a galaxy type setting. I wanted to use a black and white image as opposed to the background as i wanted to see if the whole idea of using my own images in comparison to an actual image around a particular era such as the 60's would work better.
I distorted the image f the woman to be bigger as i wanted her to look as though she takes authority of the mountain and that no one can touch it, i did want to incorporate a part of an image with a space feature because the colours are very surreal and by reversing the size of it, i wanted to see if it looked better this way. I cut into the image so that it had a multi purpose meaning of looking like a pond in the middle of the mountains, I took on from what i should experiment with next from my previous experiment with the colour of string relating to the colours of the images i include (mainly the colours relating to the background), Overall i love how the string flows around the shape outlining the size of the mountain, i would change how i have applied the space to the background as i this i should've experimented with acrylic to see if it gave less of a surreal effect or not. To do next think i should begin to add more out of space themed images within scenarios and not as a background.
For this experiment i have taken on from my reflections and decided to use the space background as the walkway fro an abandoned bus because i had the intentions of creating a piece where the image of a human is getting on a bus they once used to use when they were on earth and are re living what they used to do. I like the concept and the way i have used oil pastel in black to allow the experiment to be focused on including background as part of a collage but not in a background, but instead as a scenario where my mind is controlling how I create imagery. TO improve or further the experiment i would begin to create texture on the window so i show a better understanding of what collages endure.
For this experiment i have used another vintage image and wanted to stem away from using the colours shown in an out of space theme by changing the type of background, i wanted to experiment with how surreal a collage can be portrayed if i were to use more modern photographs, i have used an image of clouds in the sky because it is something we see as human all of the time so we can relate to the collage easier. I have then used sylvan margaines photograph of an abandoned cinema whilst surreally portraying an old man walking up the cinema as a hill, i have done this to experiment with shape and how it can be distorted in different uses, for example, the shape of a horizontal line appears for the chairs to shape this way when actually it could represent a man walking up a hill.
I have then added white string to experiment with the intentions of making it act as an imagery of an object like the man has spilt what he was carrying, i actually think the white string works well with the background because there is a lot of white from the photograph of the clouds. Overall i like how the collage has a basic structure of displaying different images as a primary background but to improve i would try out cutting and sticking in images in smaller pieces to see f the layers create a better outlook relating to texture. -- I NEED TO TRY THIS
For these experiments i was aiming to incorporate more string so i was able to see whether the compositions look more surreal and make sense if the materials creates a distortion of line, For the first collage in particular i have followed up what i set myself for reflection to breakup the image to create texture, however, i do not like how the image is not connected as it looks like i have not had a purpose nor does t show that i understand the distortion of juxtaposing a background. I do like how i have changed the shape of the string but to me, i feel like this collage needs a black surface such as black cartridge paper instead of white as it looks uncontrolled and has no meaning to my other experiments, I am taking it as a trial and error case scenario.
The second collage incorporate a technique called cellotape transfer as i wanted to reveal the colour less from they mage due to wanting to make it appear more vintage , old, used and abandoned like relating to my current theme. I like how there is some hint of texture created from sticking down the sellotape transfer because it almost mimics the waves in the pool, i decided to add another meaning to the image by making it seem like the water is being tipped into a tea pot- i really love how the cut out image has been portrayed with no background, taking it out of the normal shape of a collage being in an A5 limit. In comparison to the experiment previous i feel like the duplicated lines of white string really work with this composition because it makes sense and links to the other parts of imagery (The tea pot). I put the string this way because I want to create a visual link from individuals being in the water in comparison to looking at the teapot.
The third experiment was mainly focused on emphasising the string as a representation of of feeling or thought and in this case i wanted to juxtapose the expression of the woman faces as being happy in comparison to them actually feeling enclosing, trapped and sad that they are deserted on another planet alone. I used white string instead of black as a i wanted to hide the colour actually reflecting the mood and so instead the pattern could be more powerful in comparison. I do like how the background is a close up of mars but i do not like how i experimented with blue oil pastels as a act of shadow and surreal colour. it doesn't suit the composition nor does it actually shadow the shape of the 2D texture.
